Biggest Horse Racing Events in the UK
National Hunt racing takes centre stage between November and April as all roads lead to the Cheltenham Festival in March, whilst the best of the action culminates at Aintree's Grand National Festival in April. Last season, Paul Nicholls claimed his 12th Champion Trainer's title, whilst Brian Hughes was crowned Champion Jockey for the second time.
Focus switches towards the Flat in May, as the season is centered around the five Classics, exclusively for the three-year-old colts and fillies. Newmarket hosts the 2000 Guineas and the 1000 Guineas in May, whilst Epsom plays host to the most fantastic Flat race in the world, The Derby and The Oaks, a month later.
The season's final Classic, the St. Leger, doesn't discriminate. It's open to both sexes. A horse completing the hat-trick is known as the Triple Crown, last achieved by Nijinsky in 1970. Camelot was the last horse to come close to emulating Nijinsky, going down by ¾ of a length in the 2012 Leger.
Grand National
This race is one of the most significant sporting events on the calendar for many people in the UK. Taking place early April every year at Aintree, the Grand National is one of the most wagered upon races in the world, and we're already taking bets for the 2023 race.
Epsom Derby
One of the UK Triple Crown events, the Epsom Derby, or simply The Derby the Derby, is one of the oldest races in the world. Cheltenham Festival
Another one of the big ones, the Cheltenham Festival, is four days of horse racing madness, with one of the most desired prizes in all of world horse racing up for grabs, the Cheltenham Gold Cup. This event usually takes place mid-March every year, and you can bet on the 2023 festival right here.
2000 Guineas
This is one of the other UK Triple Crown events usually held in late April at Newmarket Racecourse. The 2000 Guineas Stakes was first held in 1809, and next year's race will be run on April 30, 2022.
1000 Guineas
Another of the most prestigious flat races, the 1000 Guineas Stakes, is usually run around early May at the Newmarket Racecourse. We're currently taking bets for the 2022 iteration of the 1000 Guineas Stakes right here at Fitzdares.
St Leger
The third and final UK Triple Crown event, the St Leger Stakes, is the oldest of the five British Classics. First held in 1776, this is one of the most prestigious races. Held in late April every year at Doncaster Racecourse, this is one race to keep an eye out for.
Epsom Oaks
One of the five British Classics, the Epsom Oaks, or simply the Oaks, is one of the most notable events in the horse racing calendar. First held in 1779, the Oaks is held at Epsom Downs in early June each year. We're currently taking wagers for the 2022 race here at Fitzdares.
Royal Ascot
This event is Britain's most valuable meet with some considerable prize money up for grabs, making this one of the year's biggest events. It is held mid-June each year at Ascot Racecourse, with the most prestigious race being The Gold Cup.
Biggest Horse Racing Events in the Rest of the World
Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (France)
This is the prime event over in France and is viewed worldwide as one of the significant events in the horse racing calendar. Held in early October at Longchamp Racecourse in Paris, the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe is one to mark in your international calendar.
Melbourne Cup (Australia)
The biggest race in Australia, the Melbourne Cup, was first run in 1861 and is one of the big ones in the international calendar. The race is usually held in early November at Flemington Racecourse.
Kentucky Derby (USA)
First held in 1875, the Kentucky Derby is the most prestigious race in the United States. Usually run in early May at Churchill Downs, this race is the crowning jewel of the US Triple Crown.
The Preakness Stakes (USA)
Another one of the US Triple Crown events, the Preakness Stakes, is known as ‘the middle jewel'. First run in 1873, the race is held at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland, around mid-May each year.
The Belmont Stakes (USA)
The third US Triple Crown race, the Belmont Stakes, is held at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York. Also known as “the test of champions”, this race is held around mid-June each year and always makes for excellent viewing. The Bob Baffert-trained Justify was the last horse to complete the US Triple Crown in 2018.
Breeders' Cup Classic
This race is considered the premier thoroughbred Grade I race in the United States, being held at various racecourses around the United States as part of the Breeders' Cup World Championships. This is one to keep a lookout for if you're a racing fan.
